For about a dozen years beginning in the late ‘60’s, a group of Disney designers and their spouses, headed originally by Richard Irvine and his wife Ann, raised scholarship funds for art students. A yearly art exhibit and sale was held; the very first show, featuring the work of Herb Ryman, was held at the Hancock Park home of Disney Legend Harrison “Buzz” Price and his wife, Anne Price. Each year, an artist’s work was reproduced for the event. The prints shown below are the very prints from those DAFCA (Disney Artists & Friends of CalArts) shows. Now these prints (signed by the artists) are available for sale to the public, many for the first time. All proceeds support the students of Ryman Arts.

Teaching young artists, passing on his knowledge and skills, was at the heart of so much that occupied Herb Ryman’s life. He inspired and joined in a nighttime painting program for fellow Disney artists, and taught occasionally at Art Center College of Design. While his students at Art Center sketched this model, Herb painted her too. This enduring illustration served as an example, and motivation, for his class.

Herbert D. Ryman
Pacific Grove Rocks (unframed)
Signed, Limited Edition Print
Herb was already a well known illustrator for motion pictures (Mutiny on the Bounty, David Copperfield, The Good Earth) and had worked at the Disney Studio (his circus travels came into play on Dumbo) when Walt Disney asked him to create the first overall drawing of Disneyland in 1953, launching a storied career in Disney park design and illustration. But despite his Disney work, Herb never stopped painting from his travel sketchbook, and especially from property he owned just south of Carmel, California. He loved, and captured the spirit of, the ocean around Point Lobos. This painting (the original is owned by the Buzz Price family) won a California water color prize.
